RE:  CAPA and CMA Performance Level Standards Setting – HEARINGS NEXT WEEK AND EARLY NOVEMBER

Below is your opportunity to participate in the review of proposed performance level standards to be set for the CAPA and CMA tests administered to students with disabilities who do not take the regular CSTs. By clicking on the website you can download the draft performance standards (after October 16) and the dates and locations of the public hearings including video conferencing. We encourage your curriculum and instruction leadership as well as your special education staff to review the proposed performance standards and provide feedback.

See below from Superintendent O’Connell:

Dear County and District Superintendents and Charter School Administrators:

California Education Code Section 60605 requires the State Board of Education (SBE) to adopt statewide performance standards in the core curriculum areas of reading, writing, mathematics, history–social science and science and to conduct regional public hearings prior to the adoption of the performance standards.

In late September and early October, a performance standard setting for the California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA) and the California Modified Assessment (CMA) was conducted by Educational Testing Service, the testing contractor for both tests.

The SBE will hold three regional public hearings in October and November 2008 to consider comments regarding the proposed performance standards for the CAPA and the CMA. Details, including date, time, location, and the proposed performance standards, are available for review on the Public Notices Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/pn/pn/index.asp.

If you have questions regarding this matter, please contact the State Board of Education at 916-319-0827.

Sincerely,

JACK O'CONNELL
State Superintendent of Public Instruction
