Subject: CTC Considering Science Foundational Credential
Please send this to the HR Council, Superintendents Council, CIE Council, Middle
Grades Council, Secondary Council.
The Commission on Teacher Credentialing is gathering information on the
feasibility of developing a "Science Foundational Credential." If
developed, this credential would authorize a teacher to teach Integrated
Science. An informal group of HR administrators reviewed the concept and
see a great deal of merit in this credential. It would require a teacher
to complete the basic science portion of the current specialized credentials,
however, they would not have to "specialize" in the separate science
content areas that the current credential requires. It is seen as allowing
more teachers to train for science and thus provide more Highly Qualified
Teachers in the Integrated Science arena.
The CTC has asked us to gather some data to determine if there is a need and a
market for this type of credential. I am requesting that answer these
questions and reply directly to Dr. Larry Birch at the CTC office by forwarding
your answers to his email at
lbirch@ctc.ca.gov
1. If there was a Science Foundational Credential, would your
district seek these credential holders to staff their Integrated Science
Courses? Why? Why not?
2. How many Integrated Science Courses do you have in your district by
grade level?
3. How many teachers do you currently have who are teaching Integrated Science
who are not fully credentialed science teachers?
4. Any other comments you would like to make regarding the need for a
Science Foundational Credential.
